This song is written from the perspective of a young soldier stationed in Afghanistan. He joined the service to uphold Canada's honoured peacekeeping tradition and does not want to fight an undeclared, so-called war under US command. He has learned that the Afghan tribes have overcome invaders for thousands of years, including the empires of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the Huns, the USSR, and Britain. He realizes that whatever he does, this tribal way of life will outlast the US empire and its attempt to use Afghanistan, like Iraq, as a chess piece to squeeze Iran and control mid-eastern oil.
Our young soldier does not want himself—and Canada—to be a target of insurgent anger. He does not want Canada to go down with the failing US military machine. He does not want to fight the battles of other people. He wants to support peace in the world, but wants to help Canada first. Surrounded by Afghan tribes as our own First Nations suffer, he wants to get back home.
We Got To Get Back Home
We got to get back home
Western bones are buried in Kandahar
We got to get back home
Swallowed by the tribes of Afghanistan
We got to get back home
Who is this Canadian fighting for?
We got to get back home
Just a blue-eyed bulls-eye in a bearded bazaar
Uncle Sam's engine start to smoke and rattle
Our kids are gonna burn if we take his train
All the world's people gotta fight their own battles
We got to get back home
We got to get back home
What about the water in Kasechewan?
We got to get back home
What about the desert of my hometown?
We got to get back home
And what about the beggars by the City Hall?
We got to get back home
What about the claims of our First Nations?
We got to get back home
Uncle Sam's engine start to smoke and rattle
Our kids are gonna burn if we take his train
All the world's people gotta fight their own battles
We got to get back home
We got to get back home
(Instrumental)
Uncle Sam's engine start to smoke and rattle
Our kids are gonna burn if we take his train
All the world's people gotta fight their own battles
We got to get back home
We got to get back home
We got to get back home (repeat)
I don't fight for the stars and the stripes
It make no sense to poke a hornet's nest
